Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina lumbered ashore August 25, 2005, Thursday evening with punishing winds and torrential rain in densely populated southeast Florida, leaving at least two people dead and more than 1 million without electricity.

Look at what the weather looked like at this point from our front door and window.

 Pounding Florida
The color-enhanced radar image provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows the center of Hurricane Katrina about 10 miles away from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., just prior to 6 p.m. on Thursday.

This storm was relatively small.

The eye was only 10 miles across, and hurricane force winds extended only 15 miles from the center.

At this point, the hurricane turned abruptly South and we

missed getting hit by the Hurricane force winds.

The high winds to our South caused many big trees like this one

to topple over taking power lines with them.  There were at least

two deaths related to trees falling on people.

A Banyan tree lays toppled on West Park Road in Hollywood.

To get a sense of the tree's scale, see how the mammoth plant

dwarfs the person walking past and the street sign.

This is not good on the paint job, much less the structure.

The Ft. Lauderdale Beach area looked like this.  Lots of sand

washed and blown up on on the roads.

Hurricane Wilma

 HAMMERED -
I will always remember the first newspaper that arrived at our house after the Hurricane.  It read HAMMERED in bold print which took up nearly the entire page.

Hurricane Wilma gave us plenty of time to prepare.  It stalled in Mexico and turned back in the predicted path.  The Catagory 4 Storm would hopefully loose strength (we prayed).

It hit our doorstep on October 23rd.  The eye was 75 miles across.  We were in the eye for nearly an hour before the back side hit.  It was worse than the front side.
